Hong Kong junior sports stars Tam Wai-yeung and Sherry Tsai Hiu-wai have won Omega Rose Bowl Sportsperson of the Year Awards again this year.

Tam Wai-yeung from Chong Gene Hang College was named Sportsboy of the Year in the boys' school section for the third consecutive year with his achievements in basketball and contribution to his school's sports.

'I never thought I would get the award again. I'm very happy that my efforts were recognised,' Wai-yeung said.

Wai-yeung was made captain of the Hong Kong Junior Basketball Team and a member of the Hong Kong National Team pool because of his great basketball skills.

In the 16th Asia Basketball Competition for Juniors, he was the top rebounder. He also led his team to win the Asia 3 on 3 Basketball Competition.

He was also awarded one of the Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars Awards by the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong early this year.

He was grateful for the support of his family, teachers and principal in sports activities.

In addition to basketball, he is also involved in other sports such as athletics, cross-country running and football.

He thinks the support he gets from his family is very important.

'My family has been supporting me all these years,' he said.

Hiu-wai, a Hong Kong national swimmer, has become the Sportsgirl of the Year in the girls' school section for the second year.

The Diocesan Girls' School student, who won a bronze medal in the East Asian Games last month, was delighted to be sportsgirl of the year again.

'I would like to thank my school for giving me the opportunity to give full play to my strength in sports,' Hiu-wai said.

Besides swimming, Hiu-wai also takes part in athletics, cross-country running, life-saving and hockey.

She said she would try her best to defend her title in the coming year. She was sure she would have to face many all-round young athletes.

She said: 'I will try to do my best and contribute more to sports, not for any rewards but for the sake of developing sports.'

In the co-ed school section, Daniel Bailey of Island School and Sandra Frankland of King George V School were the sportsboy and sportsgirl, respectively.
