Tai O may be a relative backwater, but students in the remote New Territories village are more inventive and creative than those in the heart of the city, according to Friends of the Earth (FoE).

FoE project officer Jones Chan Chi-kin said students at Tai O Wing Chor Primary school were quick to grasp the concept of 'renewable energy' and were imaginative in their practical application of the theory.

'Although students in Tai O are not surrounded by as much technology as students in the city, they showed themselves to be more creative in its application. Their minds are freer to come up with ideas,' says Mr Chan.

FoE launched its latest series of free school talks for primary students in September. Schools can opt for a talk and workshop on either waste reduction or renewable energy.

'The waste-reduction talk is more popular because it is something that students can relate to. They can apply what they learn on a practical basis in everyday life through recycling,' says Mr Chan.

The workshops provide an opportunity for students to get to grips with environmental issues. Blocks of compressed plastic bags and aluminium cans - as well as recycled products - are provided for students.
