A group of 17 legislators from the pro-democracy camp confirmed yesterday that they will boycott a meeting today with Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa on his re-election bid because it is not an open session.

Speaking at a press conference, group convenor Emily Lau Wai-hing described the chief executive election as a farce.

'As it is not a fair, open and democratic election, we should not participate in it and give it any legitimacy,' she said.

But Ms Lau said they would respect fellow legislators' decisions to attend the meeting.

Legislators from the Democratic Party, The Frontier and the Confederation of Trade Unions are joining the boycott. But non-affiliated pro-democracy legislator Audrey Eu Yuet-mee will attend.

Democrat Albert Ho Chun-yan said the party would not attend any closed-door meetings on the election but members could make their own decision on whether or not to attend open forums.
