Concerns have been raised regarding the standard of security gates for residential buildings after 251 gates at 132 public housing estates were suspended from use due to faulty parts.
A territory-wide inspection of 4,831 metal gates ended yesterday. The checks were launched by the Housing Department after a 53-year-old man was injured when a locking mechanism fell off the top of a door at Kwai Yuen House in Wong Tai Sin on Tuesday.
It was the third accident involving gates at public housing estates in three weeks. Two boys were injured on two other occasions.
The department said the faulty gates would either be left open or other doors used for about a week until repairs on their magnetic locks and hinges were completed.
While accepting that the accidents were the result of poor maintenance work, Permanent Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands Leung Chin-man insisted the locks' design was acceptable and safe.
But concerns have also been raised over the safety of gates at private residential blocks and in Home Ownership Scheme buildings.
