ART IS MAKING a break from the traditional confines of museums and is out there on the street, in shopping centres - and even in MTR stations.
Pacific Place - or PP as it is affectionately known by those who enjoy hanging out there after school - will be getting its own brand of living, breathing art at the weekend. Rather than kicking off its Spring campaign with a fashion show, the creative minds at Pacific Place have opted for a combination of blasts of colour and live performances.
'Street theatre is big in Europe, but a rare treat in Hong Kong. So we've brought two acts out from Australia: the Flaggmasters and the Blue Boys mannequin act,' said Tara Lau, promotions manager at Swire Properties Management.
Called 'Elements of Desire', the campaign is inspired by the four elements of nature: earth, wind, fire and water. Each element will be represented by a different colour and performers will give impromptu performances all over the mall. Take water (LG, Garden Court): this features the Blue Boys - an Australian artist and his companiable manequins - in a pseudo shop window. And air (Level 1) will have clusters of white balloons suspended from the ceiling and performers dressed in white.
'What the world needs is more inspiration and passion about the things around us - blending fashion and art is a way to improve people's sensibilities,' said Ms Lau. Of course, she wants us in the mall to buy things, but there is no stopping you just going there to hang out. Look out for the impromtu performances from Friday to April 8 at Pacific Place.
Another exhibition to break out of galleries is People?Chair, featuring works by Hong Kong's award-winning designer Freeman Lau Siu-hong.
