More than 100 doctors have reacted angrily to suggestions that poor infection controls at the Prince of Wales Hospital are to blame for the scale of the Sars outbreak.

A spokesman for the group, who asked not to be named, said doctors at the Prince of Wales felt outraged 'because we have been at the epicentre of this for a month. We have really done our absolute darnedest to keep this thing under control'.

In a letter, the group described as hostile an article by Lam Shiu-kum, dean of medicine at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), which was published in the South China Morning Post last week. They also hit out at remarks made by Post columnist Albert Cheng.

'These articles have been damaging to the morale of frontline staff at the Prince of Wales Hospital, who have been labouring under extreme stress for more than four weeks,' the letter read.

'We find it objectionable and distressing to be subjected to such accusations, in the columns of your newspaper, by individuals who should know better.'
