In an art appreciation lesson on The Death of Marat, an important work by French painter Jacques-Louis David from 1793, students at Tsang Pik Shan Secondary School were urged to think about the relationship between heroism and death.

They first analysed the oil-painting, which portrays the murder of French revolutionary Marat - a good friend of the painter - as if they were investigating a crime scene.

The history and cultural background behind the murder were also presented to students.

After analysing the masterpiece, students were encouraged to create comics with different perspectives such as from the point of view of the assassin or Marat himself.

This innovative approach, aimed at strengthening students' critical thinking, was the outcome of a project initiated by the Hong Kong Institute of Education and art teachers from Tsang Pik Shan Secondary School, Chiu Chow Association Secondary School and CUHK FAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School, all in Ma On Shan, two months ago.
