NEWMAN COLLEGE clinched their second all-Hong Kong inter- school title this year after defeating Ju Ching Chu Secondary School (Kwai Chung) 17-16 in the final of the Hong Kong Inter-school Basketball Marathon held at the Habour Road Sports Centre in Wan Chai.
Newman, who also emerged champions in the Jing Ying tournament, ended the first half 11-10 ahead, but seemed to have the upper hand when Ju Ching Chu star centre, Lau Chi-kit, fouled out in the middle of the second period.
By focusing their attack on captain and centre Wu Kar-chun, Newman led Ju Ching Chu by one point going into the last 14 seconds.
With Ju Ching Chu guard Lee Kim-wong on the attack, Newman triple-teamed him, forcing the player to lose the ball and the match.
Newman guard Lee Kiu-fung, the Jing Ying tournament's most valuable player, said the team did a great job in defence.
'Although we didn't attack well, our defence was really good and we were very united,' said the 19-year-old.
