Popularity boost for Tung and his team

The popularity ratings for leading Hong Kong government officials have risen in the past month.

A poll by the University of Hong Kong's Public Opinion Programme, which interviewed 1,012 people from August 1 to 5, showed that the ratings of Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa and his principal officials had all rebounded.

Mr Tung's rating rose from 38.1 marks out of 100 early last month to 43 marks this month. Chief Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen's rating rose from 56 to 62.5 marks during the same period. Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung Oi-sie's rating rose from 40.4 to 49.1, while newly appointed Financial Secretary Henry Tang Ying-yen scored 56.5.

Secretary for Environment, Transport and Works Sarah Liao Sau-tung remained the most popular of Mr Tung's 11 political appointees, with her rating rising from 54.7 to 60.1. While Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Frederick Ma Si-hang remained bottom though his rating rose from 38.2 to 42.

The trend also applied to non-official members of the Executive Council. Leung Chun-ying's score rose from 40.8 to 44.7 and Tsang Yok-sing's rating registered 40.5, compared with 37.3 a month ago.

Robert Chung Ting-yiu, director of the Public Opinion Programme, said it suggested the government was emerging from its crisis.
