Liberal Party second most popular after Tien gesture

The Liberal Party has emerged as the second most popular political group in Hong Kong, according to an opinion poll.

The survey showed the party jumped to second place, from sixth position in May, with its approval rating rising from 49.3 points to 50.7.

The survey was carried out by the Public Opinion Programme at the University of Hong Kong and 1,032 people were interviewed between August 18 and 20.

The Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong, with a rating of 41.2 points, was the biggest loser, registering a 6.7-point decline. Its also dropped from seventh to eighth place in the rankings.

The Confederation of Trade Unions topped the list of the 10 most popular political groups with a rating of 51.3 points. The Democratic Party ranked third with 50.1 points.

Programme director Robert Chung Ting-yiu said Liberal Party chairman James Tien Pei-chun's resignation from the Executive Council in July had been a turning point in halting progress on legislation for the proposed National Security Bill.
