Would you be surprised to see a large pile of old soft-drink containers turned into useful things, such as a cat's kennel or a set of musical chimes?

This is what a group of innovative students came up with at the School Environmental Creativity Challenge, held at Swire Coca-Cola's Sha Tin plant last weekend.

Co-organised by the Swire Coca-Cola and Business Environmental Council, the competition was aimed at providing an occasion for students to get creative and learn more about environmental protection.

During the final, 69 students from 20 primary and secondary schools were required to build their chosen designs in four hours.

The winning piece, from secondary school champions HKTA Lee Heng Kwei, was a cat's kennel made from nothing but cans, plastic bottles and boxes.

Chiu Kar-man and Tsang Suk-hung, both 16, from the winning team, said they had a lot of fun creating the design.
