Tse Wai-lam, 39, says Hong Kong needs heroes like Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei to give people hope and the community a sense of solidarity. Ride from North Point to Tai Mong Tsai. Cost: $195.8.
Bringing Yang Liwei to Hong Kong was the only thing that Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa has done right in a long time. It was definitely the best thing for Hong Kong, especially at a time when the city was engulfed by bad publicity generated by a series of government blunders.
Every day, all we hear is negative news - the Harbour Fest fiasco, the tug of war over harbour reclamation, the Equal Opportunities Commission scandal and calls for resignations over some of these issues.
Hong Kong is experiencing some very dark moments; there is nothing for people to look forward to. Colonel Yang was definitely a saviour to us all, giving us a breath of fresh air as well as a confidence boost.
The feel-good factor that Colonel Yang brought was desperately needed to revive the city and improve public morale.
What he has given Hong Kong is something money can't buy - even a few more Harbour Fests wouldn't be able to achieve the same result.
