The five-star Zhuhai hotel where nearly 300 Japanese tourists were allegedly involved in an orgy with Chinese prostitutes has reopened for the first time since it was closed in September.

But it did so only after agreeing to abide by a number of rules imposed by the authorities.

Yesterday, a staff member in the general manager's office at the Zhuhai International Conference Centre Hotel confirmed that it had been given permission to reopen by the police and the local tourism board.

The hotel was closed shortly after Guangdong media reported the orgy, which allegedly involved 285 tourists from Osaka and more than 300 prostitutes. More than 300,000 yuan is believed to have been spent during the orgy, which took place from September 16 to 18, the eve of the anniversary of the 1931 Japanese invasion of China.

The incident caused a furore across the country and fanned anti-Japanese sentiment in both the mainland media and internet chat rooms.

The hotel employee said that as a condition for reopening, the hotel had agreed to take a number of measures, including giving all staff training in regulations.
