Philips Hong Kong Universities Football League defending champions City University (CityU) finally got their first taste of victory in this year's campaign, defeating the Institute of Vocational Education 2-0 last Sunday.
CityU, who drew with both the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Shue Yan College in their first two games, must thank mid-fielder Li Chun-wai and forward Hui Hong-ming, whose goals ensured victory.
CityU will take on Chu Hai College in their final first-round game on January 11. CityU have to win that game to guarantee a top-two finish in Pool A and a place in the semi-finals.
Chu Hai College drew with HKUST in another Pool A game.
In Pool B, the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd), last season's runners-up, edged out the University of Hong Kong (HKU) 2-1 at the Joint School Sport Centre in Kowloon Tong.
After a scoreless first half, HKU striker Forrest Jiang Di got the first goal in the 60th minute. HKIEd hit back 15 minutes later through defender Yeung Kin-wing, who scored the equaliser.
