We enjoy stamping our 'we love it' chop on things that we think are great. And for the things we don't think much of, we have a special 'we hate it' icon showing a man with his head in a bucket.

We had a good giggle looking back over the year at the things that tickled our fancy - and the few that made us want to throw up.

And we also want to take say thanks to all the teenagers who have got involved with SYP over the last year, either through Top Teen, the games and quizzes or just by writing in and letting us know what you think. We love hearing from you at syp@scmp.com.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl: This summer blockbuster starred two of Hollywood's hottest men, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. And looking fab was Keira Knightley (more than in Bend it Like Beckham) as a colonial governor's daughter kidnapped by a camp Geoffrey Rush.

1. Hopscotch - who would have thought a mainland band could sound so European? A Wishful Way is the band's debut album and it puts a new perspective on Chinese pop. We look forward to hearing more of the dreamy vocals of lead singer and lyricist Tian Yuan, a 17-year-old school girl.

1. Hoot by Carl Hiassen - American crime writer Carl Hiassen's first novel for young readers is a quirky teenage mystery set in Florida. The kids are up against the world of foolish adults who don't understand what's important in life. And the heroes are slightly badly behaved teens who try to sort out the adults's mess.

1. Tatu - when we slammed the Russian pop duo in April for being little more than a marketing gimmick, our mailbox was flooded with fans writing in from all over the world - yes, SYP is even read in Alabama. Love them or hate them, it would have been hard to get through this year without hearing their debut album 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane.
