Lunar New Year is almost here, so it may be worthwhile visiting one of the city's thousands of soothsayers, to find out what the Year of the Monkey holds in store for you. Sceptical? After this week's sentencing of rogue fortune-teller Keung Chi-wai, you could be right. But don't let one bad egg put you off - the city offers plenty of more reliable options.
Aura-soma
Louise Pang offers consultations in this self-healing system that uses colour, aromatherapy and crystals to promote physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health for $555 an hour. She also gives tarot card readings ($100 a question), designed 'more as a road map to reach your chosen destination' than as a straightforward fortune-telling tool, she says. The Health Portal Holistic Healing Centre, 3/F, 6 Wo On Lane, Central, tel: 9197 7767.
Tarot card reading
Jenny Kam gives tarot card readings at the New Age Shop on Old Bailey Street, Central (tel: 2810 8694). She describes herself as clairsentient, or clear-sensing, rather than clairvoyant or clairaudient, and says that, as a tarot-reader, she tunes into the energy of a person, place or event, and stimulates self-knowledge. One-hour sessions cost $650.
Temple Street Night Market
The market, a short walk from Jordan MTR station, is open every day from about 6pm to 11pm. The fortune-tellers (above) set up shop in Market Street (off Shanghai Street), and there are more near Kansu Street. On offer are tarot readings, face readings and palmistry. An intriguing sign in a Market Street booth offers 'Fortune-telling by birds'. Prices start from $50, and about one-third of the booths offer services in English.
