Gilberto Gill: Bob Marley Tribute

Ended last night

Brazilian music legend Gilberto Gil brought a ray of sunshine as bright as the red shirt he wore to an otherwise wet and dreary Hong Kong spring day when he opened a two-show run at the festival.

It was truly a meeting of two musical legends from the minute Gil launched his tribute to one of his idols, Bob Marley, with Time Will Tell.

The crowd was obviously ready to party and it did not take long to warm them up. Marley and Gil have a lot in common, although Marley was first and foremost a reggae man while Gil experimented with a lot of Brazilian genres such as the samba and the baiao.

Most of the songs were from Gil's Kaya N'Dan Gaya album, but he also took the roaring crowd through classic hits like No Woman No Cry and Could You Be Loved.

It is testament to Gil's formidable talent that he has been able to fuse his own Brazilian style to Marley's Jamaican beats, which give the old Marley hits a new twist while  remaining faithful to the tunes.

Gil turned up the heat in the concert hall and turned it into a hot Caribbean beach party with the crowd on their feet within the first 15 minutes.

Even the woman  next to me, who looked like she would rather be slaughtering chickens at Wan Chai market, could not resist getting on her feet by the second half of the show. After all, how often do you get Brazil's minister of culture playing Bob Marley hits for you? Not often enough, that's for sure.
