Albert Lee, of the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, says studying for his University of Bristol EdD is helping him understand the mechanics of education, which he integrates into his work promoting health education policies in schools.
Professor Lee, who is also director of the Healthy Schools Programme, says gaining a doctorate will help him further develop health education programmes.
'Coming from a medical background with a particular focus on health education in schools, it is important for me to understand how school education polices are formulated,' Professor Lee says.
Face-to-face tuition and his EdD research work is helping him understand how school governing bodies approach, evaluate, plan and administer new polices.
The dissertation he is now working on will examine this topic.
He says a comprehensive programme is needed to include teacher training, curriculum development, community participation, changing policies and practices, and research.
'With a better understanding of education administration and management I am able to speak the same language to overcome challenges and difficulties,' Professor Lee says.
