Independent Alan Leong Kah-kit will run on his own, while Democratic Party candidates Fred Li Wah-ming, Wu Chi-wai and Alex Ho Wai-to will be on another list.

Their pro-government rival, the DAB, is also believed to be adopting a split strategy. Incumbent lawmaker Chan Yuen-han is expected to team up with Lam Man-fai under the Federation of Trade Unions banner. Chan Kam-lam is believed to be running with Choi Chun-wa, one of the federation's vice-chairmen, under the banner of the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong.

Twenty-five candidates registered for the election yesterday - seven in functional constituencies and 18 for geographical constituencies, including in Kowloon East.

'We hope Mr Leong's participation will stimulate people who are not in the habit of voting to cast votes for the pro-democracy camp this time.'

Among those on hand for support were Mr Leong's fellow barristers in the Article 45 Concern Group, and veteran Democrat Szeto Wah, who is not standing for re-election.
