Keep up with developments - or be left behind, says Epson Hong Kong executive

POSTGRADUATE learning is a way of keeping pace with a changing world, says William Tsang, administrative manager at Epson Hong Kong.

'Learning is not just about staying busy by continuing to attend one course after another, gathering more and more information - it also puts priority on noticing, adapting and learning from change,' said the Open University of Hong Kong  (OUHK) Master of Corporate Governance   graduate.

Mr Tsang, who won a top student award and also completed an MBA programme with the OUHK, said he realised the need to upgrade his skills more than 10 years ago, when he noticed his work colleagues boosting their career prospects through further education.

'Continuous learning has become a prominent concept over the past decade,' he said.

'Organisations are changing rapidly. It is difficult to find an approach to doing something in organisations that doesn't soon become outdated.

'The concept of continuous learning has become important because it allows you to keep in touch with trends and developments, while strengthening your career prospects.'

After researching various options, Mr Tsang chose the OUHK programmes because the university offered flexible study patterns while providing high-quality tuition and widely respected qualifications.

He also stressed the networking aspect of the programmes.

'They are a good opportunity to meet like-minded professionals,' he said.

'The lecturers and students involved also have considerable experience, which can prove valuable as part of the learning process.'

Effective time management was required to complete a postgraduate programme and manage a full-time job, Mr Tsang said.

He completed his MBA programme in two years.

He is also actively involved with various charities and recently became a member of the newly formed OUHK Mentor programme.

The programme was set up to advise students with their studies and career choices.

He said in this economic climate, employees were eager to improve their workplace competitiveness but were wary of committing too much effort to education lest it affected their professional performance.

Mr Tsang said the career benefits of a postgraduate degree were considerable, but advised prospective students to carefully consider what was involved before signing up.

'Taking a postgraduate course while in full-time employment is a major undertaking,' he said.

'Participants require a high level of commitment and they must really want to succeed.

'Given the career pressures some students might encounter, there is a possibility they may not complete the course.

'This is something they should consider before enrolling,' he said.

Mr Tsang is also vice-chairman of the OUHK MBA student association.
