Embattled Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa will face his political destiny when he meets President Hu Jintao today.
Mr Tung is scheduled to meet Mr Hu this evening after attending the opening ceremony of the annual session of the National People's Congress. It is believed the meeting will seal the chief executive's fate.
It is widely held that Mr Tung will announce his resignation, most likely for medical reasons, before he is elected vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference on March 12.
At a cocktail reception held by Mr Tung yesterday for Hong Kong delegates to the national parliament and the top advisory body members scrambled to shake hands and be photographed with him.
'There was a huge round of hand-clapping after his speech, the atmosphere was much more enthusiastic than in previous years,' said NPC deputy David Chu Yu-lin.
Mr Tung's speech reviewed his seven years in power.
