Hong Kong-based Helen Boucher regularly travels to the US:

'For a short-haul flight [less than six hours], I don't take much - just some lip balm because the air-conditioner really dries you out. I take a light perfume to spray on smelly people sitting next to me, mints and water.

'For long haul, wear something comfortable. No one will be photo-graphing you at the other end, so skip the celebrity look. Never wear makeup - it ends up down your face. Always take lip balm, moisturiser, hand cream, a hairbrush, deodorant and water.

'The free packs the airlines give you or samples are great because they take up hardly any room. Muji do refillable bottles and the Body Shop will refill. They also have mini sizes.

'I take my makeup bag and sometimes put some on for landing because it makes me feel better.
