Ionic cellulite treatment

Reading Time:2 minutes
Why you can trust SCMP
Suzanne Harrison

What is it? A new way to get rid of - or reduce - cellulite and slim thighs, buttocks and stomachs.

How can it do that? The Iothermie machine combines galvanic ionisation, micronised algae, heat and conductive aroma clay, which is said to detoxify, slim, firm and tone while improving lymphatic drainage. Salon owner, Paua Group, says galvanic stimulation uses negative and positive ions to 'propel active preparations deep into the dermis'. The micronised algae aids detoxification. It's said to be used at more than 3,000 spas across Europe.

Who would use it? Paua Group says it's best for people who've been dieting and have reached their target weight, but are unable to remove cellulite.

What was it like? A mixed bag. The therapist measures your thighs and waist and gives you a quick body brush. After placing nodes on the thighs, she puts a plastic sheet filled with what feels like runny mud under you. You're wrapped with more plastic sheets and the fun begins. There's a slight tingling and, as the power increases, it gets uncomfortable. Just as you're ready to rip the nodes off, the therapist gives you a head, neck and shoulder massage. Then she increases the power. It's nothing compared with the initial shock and the treatment passes in a haze of massage.

Sounds a bit unpleasant: Only for the first five minutes. The 75-minute session costs $1,100. The flabby bits do feel as if they're getting a good blasting.

Then what happens? The algae and clay is washed away and the therapist measures you again.
