What is it? A 90-minute facial that uses an ingredient called tourmaline to improve the skin's radiance. What's tourmaline? A plant and marine-based energising mineral that, when finely ground and combined with antioxidants, is said to balance skin. According to Aveda, a one-hour treatment can enhance the skin's natural renewal process. What was good about it? It was much the same as other facials. The therapist cleanses the skin and analyses it before steaming. She then follows with some painless extractions. There's a generous time allotted for a face, neck and shoulder massage - about 25 minutes. The therapist concentrates much of the massage around the eyes and pressure points, which is good for tension relief. This is followed by a mask, over which she places what feels like gauze and then paints another cream over the top. Ten minutes or so later, the gauze is removed, which is like a huge weight being lifted, and makes the skin feel cool. During the mask, she massages both hands to send you off to sleep. The products don't have an overpowering smell, making them good for sensitive skin. And there's no loud dolphin music to stop you dozing off. What wasn't so good about it? There wasn't anything bad about it, but it wasn't out of the ordinary, either. Extractions aren't always welcome, but it's pretty much a given. What about the results? All was forgiven on the extraction front once the lights came on. The result was impressive: clean skin, no blotches from the extractions, a more even skin tone and deep rehydration which lasted for days. What was the Aveda Spa like? Considering it's in the heart of Central, it's surprisingly large and quiet, and the rooms have dimmed lighting, making it instantly relaxing. The rooms are small but functional, with simple, natural decoration. There are facilities such as a shower, makeup and hairdryers, which means you can wash the product from your hair before stepping out the door. There's a hair salon (Aveda was originally known for its hair-care products) and body treatments. There are also slimming and whitening treatments, including a cellulite body wrap and whitening exfoliation. What's does 'elemental nature' mean? Aveda says it's grounded in the ayuverdic belief that everything is composed of five basic elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. Although the balance is different for everyone, factors such as lifestyle, stress and diet can cause these elements to shift. The therapist gives each client a questionnaire to determine their skin type. Elemental nature is part of the company's holistic philosophy. Which is? To use as many natural ingredients as possible, including lavender, camomile, bergamot, rice bran, soy protein, ylang ylang, lime cucumber, black tea and avocado. Aveda says it aims to be environmentally responsible with its products and packaging. How much does the facial cost? The elemental nature facial is $800 for 90 minutes at Aveda, 3/F Hing Wai Building, 36 Queen's Road Central. Inquiries: 3106 2868
