What is Philip B? A range of shampoos, conditioners, oils and body washes that use natural ingredients such as herbs and plant extracts. Is Philip B a real person? Yes. His name is Philip Berkovitz (below) and he's a hairstylist from Los Angeles whose clients have included Nicole Kidman and Sharon Stone. He now makes his own line of natural hair-care products and body washes. He says his mother used to make products with simple ingredients from her kitchen, and this helped him in his quest for natural cure-alls to hair problems. He uses ingredients such as shea butter, peppermint, juniper berry, sage and cacoa (there's a chocolate body wash). He was in Hong Kong last week as part of an Asian tour to promote his products. What does he say about hair? That it's all about the scalp, and that people don't brush their hair enough to move the natural oils from the scalp up and back down the hair shaft. Because so many people chemically treat their hair, the roots get burnt and they need oil treatments to balance the condition of the scalp. 'Hair is dead and skin is alive,' Berkovitz says. 'Great hair comes from a great scalp.' How can we help to make it look its best day to day? 'There are more oil glands on your scalp than anywhere else on your body,' Berkovitz says. 'If you use a natural bristle brush, which is porous, this moves the natural sebum down the hair shaft. Brush when it's dry because water and oil don't mix and you won't be able to get the oil out.' What about shampooing? Berkovitz says that if you must wash it daily because of exercise or grime, then just wet it and use a little bit of conditioner rather than shampoo every other day. What's the best way to blow-dry? Flip yourself over, he says, and allow gravity to take control. Then start blow-drying from the nape of the neck. When is the best time to do all this brushing? Every day before you wet or shampoo your hair. Any hair secrets? Healthy hair requires maintenance, he says. Good products contain fatty lipids, which are dried by chemicals and flat irons that straighten hair. If your hair is feeling oily, a light shampoo should be massaged really well into the scalp. Really mix it into the hair, as well. Philip B products can be found at Joyce Boutiques.
