Intense pulse light facial
What is it?
It's a facial with the usual cleansing, mask and massage, but the therapist also uses an intense pulse light (IPL) machine, a device that repeatedly flashes a strong blue light to penetrate the skin. It targets melanin (which produces brown spots) and bacteria, and stimulates collagen for an anti-ageing effect. Proponents say it can reduce the appearance of brown spots and acne, improve skin tone and reduce fine lines over time as the collagen improves. Elemis Day Spa also uses it for hair removal on the body and face.
Are the results immediate?
No. The spa recommends having it done six times initially - but no more than that. Wait another three months before going back for a further six sessions.
Can I get this done by a doctor?
Yes. But dermatologists use a much stronger version of IPL. It's a higher intensity and can actually burn away brown spots, fine lines and acne scars. The ones used by beauty therapists reduce the appearance of facial imperfections purely for the improvement of skin tone. Someone with a skin problem such as deep scarring would be referred to a doctor.
