About 1,000BC (during the Shang dynasty) hieroglyphics showed evidence of acupuncture, and bronze needles have been excavated from ruins of that time.
From AD260 to 265, physician Huang Fumi organised ancient literature into his text, Systematic Classics of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Moxibustion is an ancient form of heat therapy used for healing. His text comprises 12 volumes and describes 349 acupuncture points.
During the Song dynasty (960-1279), physician Wang Weiyi wrote The Illustrated Manual on Points for Acupuncture and Moxibustion, which includes 657 points. He also cast two statues on which meridians and points were engraved for teaching purposes. Acupuncture became popular during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644)
