Fans of Chinese silk-and-sword epics have been salivating in anticipation of Chen Kaige's newest, The Promise, (right) starring Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi, Korean Jang Dong-kun and Japanese star Hiroyuki Sanada. Selected as the mainland's entry for the Oscars, the blockbuster is due this Christmas.
But for those who can't wait, it seems the 11-minute trailer they prepared for the Cannes Film Festival six months ago has found its way onto the website of one of its Chinese sponsors, Nissan Tiida. By accident or not, the trailer - originally intended for viewing only by international film buyers - reveals a lot of sizzling footage of love scenes between Cheung and Sanada, and Cheung and Jang, in addition to the monumental battles. It also gives away a lot of plot, so if you don't like spoilers, don't click onto http://www.tiida.com.cn/tiida&thepromise/download/promise_L.zip. When it previewed in Chengdu last month, some viewers said this grand romance between a slave and a concubine was even better than Zhang Yimou's Hero. The Chinese title is Wu Ji. For America, the Weinstein Company is planning to name it Master of the Crimson Armor.
