It was a big weekend for director Mathew Tang Hon-keung. His poignant Macau-based indie film B420 was finally released and he's eagerly awaiting the results.
'I haven't checked the figures yet. The opening day was just okay,' he says. 'These two weeks are very crucial. If B420 sells, negotiation for my next project will be easier.'
Certainly, winning the Grand Prix at the Fukuoka Film Festival in July must help (Tang is seen with the award and actress Miki Yeung Oi-kan). The drama about disenfranchised youth, co-staring Yeung and Sam Lee Chan-sam, is more than just a clever name, but it all began with that title.
'I had no story, no character but just the title. I kept thinking about doing something with its double meaning [before 20, before too old]. There's a big difference in life from when you're in a school uniform than when you're not.
'But I know Hong Kong's market is still very commercial. If you ask me, I prefer my film to be watched by many movie-goers rather than getting a lot of awards but failing at the box office.'
