TOP PERFORMING business students invited to join the Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) honour society experience unique opportunities to network with their peers and build business relationships that last a lifetime.

The society, which was founded in the United States in 1913, recognises academic achievement in the study of business and personal and professional excellence in the practice of business. BGS draws its name from the Greek words, beta meaning honour, gamma for wisdom and sigma for earnestness.

A total of 91 business students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) School of Business were recently inducted into the society. The HKUST chapter, which was established in 2000, at present has more 800 members. Worldwide BGS membership tops 540,000.

BGS is open to second-year undergraduate students with a cumulative GPA (grade average point) in the top 7 per cent, third-year students in the top 10 per cent and graduates in the top 20 per cent.

Francis Lui, professor of economics at the HKUST School of Business and Management and director at the university's Centre for Economic Development, said when students are invited to join BGS, they achieve the highest recognition a business student can achieve anywhere in the world.

He said the number of new members invited to join from HKUST reflected the quality of the business students and the academic strength of the programmes they studied.
