A FLEDGLING INDUSTRY a decade ago, the financial planning sector is today one of Hong Kong's fastest growing sectors.

There is now a steady demand for experienced professionals and young trainees who should be well versed in investments, tax laws and insurance to advise their clients on short-term and long-term financial goals.

Enoch Lo Kam-cheung, principal consultant at Convoy Financial Services, said the important thing was always to put the client's interests first.

'As the market develops, clients are looking for competent and knowledgeable advisers instead of good salespeople,' Mr Lo said.

Last year, he won two prestigious performance awards from the Institute of Financial Planners of Hong Kong (IFPHK).

He said professional qualifications such as the widely recognised Certified Financial Planner (CFP) were a good starting point to gain industry knowledge and develop client confidence. However, more was required, he said.

'Financial planning is a people business, so interpersonal skills are very important,' Mr Lo said.
