He's been through his ups and downs, but the good times are definitely here again for Canto-pop singer Hacken Lee Hak-kan.
During the late 1990s, Lee's record sales dropped and he got used to performing to half-empty concert halls, but tickets to his Lunar New Year concerts starting on Saturday have been selling fast.
Lee, who has made more than 60 records, has invited musicians such as percussionist Lung Heung-wing, flautist Tam Po-shek, erhu performer Siu Pak-yung and violinist Huang Mengla to perform. The four collaborated with Lee on his latest album, Concert Hall, which has been one of the best-selling Chinese records recently.
He's also enlisted Joey Leung Wing-chung - who co-hosted the popular talent show A Minute to Fame with Lee last year - and TV star Roger Kwok Chun-on to perform a comedy satirising the local showbiz industry. Lee, who recently won most popular singer at TVB's music awards (for the third time), recently announced his marriage to girlfriend Emily Lo Suk-yee, a former Miss Hong Kong.
Signed to Polygram (now Universal) after winning a singing contest in 1985, Lee released his debut album while still in secondary school. He was then compared to Alan Tam Wing-lun, who later became a crucial figure in his career.
