The Room to Read charity raised more than $4.7 million at its gala wine dinner last month at the Island Shangri-La hotel.

The event featured wine-tasting with Jancis Robinson and a sumptuous meal. Room to Read founder John Wood was thrilled with the money raised to educate children in the developing world.

Supporting the cause were Secretary of Financial Services and Treasury Frederick Ma Si-hang, PCCW boss Richard Li Tzar-kai, Su-Mei Thompson and John Ridding of the Financial Times and Henry Howard-Sneyd of Sotheby's.
