What is it?

An hour-long massage at the Four Seasons Hotel spa in Central. It involves copious amounts of warm oils and is said to target the seven major chakras in the body. These are said to be elements within the so-called celestial body that, when balanced, can dictate how mentally and physically well we feel.

The therapist begins by putting crystals on your stomach, throat, sternum and temple (where various chakras are said to be) and then attempts to release or apply energy by placing her hands just above them. I didn't realise this was what she was doing until I sneaked a look. She asked if I could feel anything. I couldn't. The therapist then applied aromatic oils to my whole body with a gentle pressure.

The spa is wonderful. It's contemporary - like the hotel - and the hydrotherapy pool (with a sauna and steam rooms surrounding it) is the ultimate in relaxation. It's quiet, pristine and instantly induces calm. The treatment rooms are large and the double one I was in over-looked the swimming pool and harbour. However, the treatment didn't live up to the surroundings. It was meant to be gentle, but I felt it was little more than a simple rubdown with oils. Also, for a beauty therapist to be able to convey or attract energy, she'd surely have to be skilled in some kind of alternative treatment. I didn't feel anything. It wasn't unpleasant, but it wasn't particularly impressive, either.
