Lee Wing-Sze

Kiddy Cheung (Sai Lo Cheung in Chinese) 1947

Creator: Yuan Bou-wan

Commissioned by a local newspaper, it was immensely popular  when the mainland was wracked by civil war. Yuan focused on adult issues and injustices through the eyes of a child. The comic was adapted for the big screen in 1950, with a six-year-old  Bruce Lee among the cast.

Uncle Choi (aka Choi Suk) 1958

Creator: Hui Guan-man

The series marked a new chapter for local comics: it was the first to adopt a modern setting, and dealt with current issues through the war hero Uncle Choi.

Old Master Q 1964

Creator: Alfonso Wong  (Wang Jiaxi)

Master Q is  familiar to Chinese communities all over the world. The strip revolves around the trials of the bumbling Old Master Q and his friends, Big Potato and Mr Qin. Still publishing today, it has been made into animated features,  television dramas and even a computer game. Tsui Hark made a live-action movie, Master Q 2001, featuring the comic characters.

13-Dot Cartoon 1966

Creator: Lee Wai-chun

The first major comic to target female readers, 13-Dot projects a trendy, westernised image of young Hong Kong women during colonial times. The main character, Miss  13 Dot, a wealthy girl sporting hip outfits, became a  role model for many young women.

Little Rascals (aka Siu Lau Man) 1970

Creator: Tony Wong Yuk-long

Renamed  Oriental Heroes (aka Lung Fu Mun) in 1975, Rascals is about two brothers who fight for justice for residents of a public housing estate. It was well received by young readers, but its gangster and violent elements drew fierce criticism. Wong's most crucial work.

Father, Ngau Chai, and Ms 1972

Creator: Wong Sze-ma

The four-panel strip focuses on the relationship of a father and his son, Ngau Chai. Focusing on family relationships, it is among the best-loved local creations. It ended in 1983 when Wong died of cancer.

Chinese Hero (aka Chung Wah Ying Hung) 1983

Creator: Ma Wing-shing

It focuses on Wah Ying-hung, an orphan who inherits his parents' martial arts skills and uses them to fight evil. The realistic style, skilful drawing, lively action scenes and plot were considered ground-breaking at the time. Circulation  reached 200,000  at its peak.

Wind and Cloud 1989

Creators: Ma Wing-shing  and Siu Kit

Another hit from the Ma repertoire, the 1998 movie  adaptation The Storm Rider, starring Ekin Cheng Yee-kin and Aaron Kwok Fu-shing, was a blockbuster. A computer game was also created based on the comic.

McMug Comic Series 1993

Creators: Alice Mak Ka-bik/Tse Lap-man

Two silly but lovable little pigs, McMug and McDull,  won the hearts of  children and adults alike. It has since spun off two animated features, My Life as McDull (2004) and McDull, Prince de la Bun (2005) and a live-action film, McDull, the Alumni (2006).
