The latest winner of the Super Girl contest, Li Yuchun, may be in the spotlight on the mainland, but former champion An Youqi (right) has caught the eye of a major Japanese record label.
The singer, who released an eponymous, debut album on the mainland last year, recently signed to Japan's Avex label. But despite the attention overseas, she says she'll focus solely on the Chinese market for now.
'We thought about developing the Japan market, but decided it would take too much time for me to learn the language,' said An (right), who was recently in Hong Kong to promote her second record, Talk About Love - her first under the Avex label.
To win the Avex deal, An had to fly to Japan last year for an audition. 'It was like an examination,' she said. 'All the management people were there and I had to sing in front of them. I was so nervous.
'My debut had a pretty good response on the mainland, but if I went away for a couple of years, many people would probably
forget me.'
