Facial hair is making a comeback in Hong Kong, according to Rowen Faulkener, style director with Toni & Guy in Central, but Grizzly Adams beards will be few and far between. 'Facial hair is coming in, but Asian guys don't grow beards,' he says. 'They may grow goatees.

'It could be a moustache, like the French look or the longer sideburns - a lot of men are wearing those now.'

Darrin Usher from the Hairdressers in Central agrees. He says the drift towards facial hair is gathering pace, but it's been creeping in for years.

'There's now a growing trend, but I've been seeing it since the 1990s,' Usher says. 'Most guys will have sideburns or a goatee, and a lot of hairdressers will promote this to give the haircut more form.'

He says contoured facial hair can give a man's features more definition, and help disguise faults such as a double chin.

'And for the younger Chinese guys, a little bit of facial hair can make them look more mature and manly,' Usher says.
