More than 373,000 visitors flocked to Hong Kong yesterday as part of the 'golden week' holiday.
Some visitors spent the day at the PLA barracks at Stanley, Stonecutters Island and Sek Kong.
More than 15,000 visited the barracks, where spectators saw parades by the army, navy and air force, demonstrations of military skills and exhibitions of weapons and training facilities.
Among the mainland travellers, cosmetics, jewellery and mobile phones were popular shopping items, with most saying they would spend a few thousand dollars.
Yan Hongkui, a businessman from Heilongjiang visiting Hong Kong for the first time, said he had shopped for two days and planned to spend about $6,000 on mobile phones and jewellery.
'These products are about 10 per cent cheaper than those back home. I am buying some for my friends as well,' he said.
But Wong Tung, manager of a boutique in Causeway Bay, said: 'Golden week is no longer a special holiday. Business on these days is just like that on normal weekends.'
