Napa Valley's Chinese twist

One of the interesting personalities at VineExpo this week was Su Hua Newton (left). She was born on the mainland, raised in Hong Kong but educated in Britain. She emigrated to California after marriage, and founded the Newton Winery in Napa Valley. What is unique about her impressive vino is not just the fine chardonnays and merlots, but the creation of a vineyard with a Chinese twist.

'I'm the only Chinese winemaker in the US,' Dr Newton says during a wine lunch. 'The approach I've taken is largely Chinese, in the way that I respect the nature around me. There's a Chinese garden which is east-facing, too. I don't think you ever forget your roots.'

Indeed, her wine was served to President Hu Jintao at his recent White House dinner. It's also curious that Dr Newton is also a director of the American doughnut chain Krispy Kreme. We wonder if she'll come up with a vintage to accompany chocolate glazed crullers?
