A fascinating documentary on innovative theatre group Theatre du Pif premieres tonight at the Fringe theatre. The Making of Gateways follows artists Sean Curran and Bonnie Chan (pictured) as they take their cutting-edge talent for drama to community theatre with a group of Tuen Mun housewives. Shot by Amos Lee, the ground-breaking result captures the transforming and cathartic power of live theatre by drawing from some seemingly ordinary people some amazing stories. 'The impulse to create is a uniquely human characteristic. This precious quality is not solely the provenance of the artist,' Curran says. 'The project gave them the excuse to approach their family and ask questions that are taboo in most Chinese households, for example, their personal tales from wars and the Cultural Revolution, with horrendous accounts, like the grandmothers of many of the women being sold into marriage as young girls. The difficult part was keeping the women focused when many have busy lives.' The screening starts at 8pm.
