Computer wizard goes straight to university
George Lam Chi-kit, who sat for his HKCEE earlier this year and was looking forward to his Form Six studies, has been offered a place at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
The former St Joseph's College student is following in the footsteps of Chan Yik-hei, the young inventor who was also accepted by HKUST without completing his matriculation.
George, 17, was accepted by the Department of Computer Science for a four-year undergraduate programme, including a one-year preparatory course.
After winning the gold medal at the 18th International Olympiad in Informatics in Mexico last month, George was approached by the HKUST, which granted him a scholarship worth HK$180,000 to cover his tuition fees.
Having already bought his Form Six textbooks, the whiz-kid was surprised by the university's invitation.
'The university contacted me at the end of August and I had to give them a reply within four days,' he said.
George's interest in computers and a clear vision about his future helped him make up his mind.
