Patten's favourite egg tart now in Macau
The favourite egg tart of former Hong Kong governor Chris Patten is on sale in Macau. The Tai Cheong Bakery opened an outlet this week on Rua de Francisco Xavier Pereira in a very local area of Macau. With chief baker Au Yueng Tin-yun and a couple of celebs in tow, the popular Hong Kong pastry mainstay, which has been operating on Lyndhurst Terrace for more than 51 years, is ready to stake its place in the enclave dominated by Portuguese-style egg tarts.
'This is our first step out of Hong Kong,' said the egg-tart baker, pictured with Rain Li Choi-wah (left) and J.J. Jia. Well, so far so good. During a three-week trial, they sold an average of 2,000 egg tarts a day. 'We are saying 'hi' to Macau residents before advancing to tourist-dense areas,' said bakery executive director Alexander Li Shing-kuen. 'I believe we should start building a brand name among the local residents. Then they'll tell the tourists where to get the best food.'
