IN THE FAST-MOVING world of accounting and financial services, demand for talented professionals has never been higher, but the entry requirements for joining the sector can sometimes seem daunting.

To assist and encourage people, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is running a certified accounting technician (CAT) programme, providing a platform for those interested in building a career in the sector.

Brenda Lam, ACCA Hong Kong's student promotion manager, said individuals could benefit in three ways - by getting a career head start, gaining recognition for skills and experience they had already attained, or accelerating progress towards a more senior accountancy position. Applicants should be at least 16 and need no formal qualifications to enrol.

'The CAT programme provides opportunities for people to pursue a career in accountancy irrespective of their educational background,' Ms Lam said. 'Although the entry requirements are low, it does not mean the qualification is easy to obtain.'

Albert Hung, programme director for accounting and management studies at the University of Hong Kong's School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE) said the programme was a good first step for building a challenging and rewarding career.

'The rapid development of business on the mainland and increased alignment with international accounting standards has created numerous opportunities for Hong Kong accounting professionals,' he said.
