Snakes On A Plane is a good name. At the African bar Nzingha, there's a performer whose moniker is even more interesting. Bebe Vampire is a Cameroonian dancer who is either a real-life shaman or a sham leftover from bad Hollywood 'ooga-booga' movies. The Paris-based entertainer will be at the Peel Street club for the next 10 nights and offering dance workshops in the afternoons. While his dance and costume may be traditional, we're a little sceptical whether other parts of the show are as indigenous. However, if Nzingha owner Amina Lamarre-Delafoulhouse says it's the real deal, we'll take her word for it.
'I met him about five or six years ago and thought he would be interesting for Hong Kong people,' she recalled. 'His act is off the beaten track. It's traditional dance from Cameroon but he does tricks too like lift people and tables with his jaw, smoke cigarettes from the corner of his eye and swallow entire bottles of wine. It's called the red-ant dance. He wears a traditional warrior costume and there are a lot of very frenetic moves.' See for yourself. Bebe Vampire's (real name Atangana Mama) performance begins nightly at 9pm. Cover is HK$250.
