A LIVELY learning environment and a variety of stimulating activities help students in a Ho Man Tin school learn English and improve their communication skills.
To arouse students' interest in learning English, teachers at Pentecostal School have designed unconventional activities for students to learn the language in a fun and interesting way.
Among the many initiatives to help learners master the language is the monthly 'English Cafe' where students engage in discussions with their teachers and principal during lunchtime.
In the auditorium-turned-cafe, students can order drinks and chat with others in English in a relaxed atmosphere.
Relishing the chance to take a break from their hectic schedule, students enjoy the monthly sessions. 'Normally we learn English in a formal classroom setting. In the English Cafe, we can chat casually with teachers and classmates. We are less afraid of making mistakes, and we can talk about all the interesting things that are not covered in lessons,' said Chole Chan Tze-yan, a Form Four student from the school.
While Chole sees casual talk as an effective way to polish her language skills, some students enjoy learning English in the cut and thrust of debates.
