Freelance personal trainer Ross Eathorne (he was World Mr Fitness in 2000) has a few pet hates in the gym - one of the main ones being people leaving dumbbells or weights lying around.

He sees a lot of beginners make mistakes. 'They may have read a glossy magazine article on a type of exercise that only has a little bit of information, and they do these exercises that are too advanced for them without advice,' he says.

'The best thing is to speak to someone at the gym. They should spend some time with a trainer.'

Class etiquette includes not using a mobile phone and taking up too much space (this also goes for weights and machines).'People should be careful not to hog a piece of equipment. Most gyms say that on cardiovascular machines the maximum during busy times is about 15 minutes.'

And let someone waiting to use a machine cut in while you have a break between your sets.
