Lee in a spin over hobby
Actor Sam Lee Chan-sum has been an avid club-goer for years, but now his love of music has prompted him to spin the decks himself.
Lee will show off his DJ-ing skills at a club in Central tonight with eight local DJs - Frankie Lam, Ryan Li, DJ Ball, Jimmy White, Ma Sir, Rozz Roize, Michael Lam and Digilick. Lee formed a group, Party Monster, with these professional and amateur DJs, and they debuted on Christmas Eve at Central's Club Magazine.
'I've known this group of DJ friends for many years. But I was just there having fun while they were spinning the records. I've always loved music and wanted to try DJ-ing,' said Lee (left), who was a member of the now-defunct hip hop band LMF.
Lee has been picking up mixing skills from Lam and practising at his DJ booth at home. 'I just want to share my favourite music with people. It's a hobby,' said Lee, who will spin breakbeat tunes at the party. 'I might try playing R&B music in future. There are many music styles I like, from punk to band sounds to R&B.'
The actor, whose DJ alias is Becareful, said he and his DJ friends would try to organise more parties during major festivals. 'The party scene in Hong Kong isn't as great as in the old days. When some world-famous DJ comes to Hong Kong, I'll go sometimes. But I'm usually disappointed by the music they play and the atmosphere is usually not really good,' said Lee, who's filming Joe Ma Wai-ho's new movie Scorpion (working title).
'I hope I can muster these DJs and tell people that we have some very good DJs here in Hong Kong. They're originally from Hong Kong and know about the culture. To a certain extent, they know better what the local partygoers want than DJs from overseas.'
