Kam Ping Hiller may be married, but she's about to have a younger man's hands all over her as the tango instructor has brought in accomplished Argentine dancer Gustavo Colmenarejo. For the next six weeks they'll be holding workshops, classes and demonstrations of that sensuous genre of dance that George Bernard Shaw must have been thinking of when he described dance as 'the vertical expression of a horizontal desire, legalised by music'.

'Tango is not just a dance. In Argentina, it's a culture,' Hiller explained. 'It's a couple's dance; other styles you can dance alone but tango you have to dance in a close embrace.'

Hiller thinks we're still not physical enough in grasping the intimacy of the style.

'People here don't like to get close. They're scared. The men don't know how to hold the lady. In Buenos Aires, they're strong and lead you all the way.'

She and Colmenarejo (pictured) will run a beginner's session on Saturday at 4.30pm at Hong Kong Park's dance room and a tango party at the Foreign Correspondents' Club on Sunday night. For details, e-mail [email protected] or call 9472-3007.
