The chairman of the household-name medicine brand Eu Yan Sang, Joseph Eu William Ye, has died. He was 80.
Eu fainted in his Kuala Lumpur home after complaining of back pain on Friday. His family took him to hospital, where he died at about 1am on Saturday, The Straits Times in Singapore reported.
Eu had been suffering from an aneurysm - a bulge in a blood vessel caused by weakened walls - for about two years, according to Joanne Eu, 31, his eldest daughter. He underwent surgery last year.
Eu was the eldest grandson of Singaporean tycoon Eu Tong-sen, who was the eldest son of Eu Kwong-pai, who founded the family business in 1879. The business spans Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, with the Bak Foong Pill its most famous product.
Joseph Eu was educated in England and served as a paratrooper in the British army towards the end of the second world war.
He joined the Eu Yan Sang board as a non-executive chairman at the end of 1993.
