Danny Chan gets to play Bruce Lee again, this time seriously
From the wacky Asian pop-culture blog Daily Dumpling comes news that China Central Television will be producing a drama series called The Legend of Bruce Lee.
This US$6.4 million-budgeted 40-episode - yes, 40! - serial is apparently another in a succession of programmes designed to promote Chinese culture leading up to the Beijing Olympics.
Hong Kong actor Danny Chan Kwok-kwan, who did a dead-on impersonation of Lee while playing the goalkeeper in Shaolin Soccer, has been cast to play the kung-fu legend.
Very interesting.
Of course, it's one thing to impersonate the dragon in a comedy, it's another to do the martial arts icon right as a dramatic character with the critical eye of legions of fans staring down, ready to check your performance for any flaws.
Now that's entering the dragon.
